How Often Should I Clean?

Have ever looked at something in your house and realized you can’t remember that last time that you cleaned it? Have you ever wondered how often you really should clean the walls or your sheets, or anything else in your home? If so, you’re not alone! We’ve put together a guide to how often you should clean the things that are most commonly forgotten!

Floors and Walls

The biggest surfaces in your home are you your floors and walls. While most people are great at cleaning their floors, walls are often forgotten. This can be a problem because walls often collect oil, dust, germs, and even allergens that circulate in the air. You should clean your walls about once a month. Wipe them down with a sanitizing solution to kill any germs that may have gathered. If you have kids, you may need to check and spot clean the walls more often. If you notice a big mess on the walls, such as sticky fingerprints, cleaning it right away will be much easier than trying to clean it after its sat for a while. Also be sure to check the corners of rooms for cobwebs and remove them with a broom or vacuum attachment.

Your floor also sees a lot of use and should be cleaned, whether that’s sweeping and mopping for hardwood and tile or vacuuming for carpets and rug, about once a week. Your carpets should be professionally cleaned about once a year to remove any build up germs and allergens that a regular vacuum cannot remove. Tile and grout should be deep cleaned and sealed by a professional tile cleaner once a year to keep them clean-looking and prevent mold growth in the grout. You do not need to clean the flooring in rooms that go unused, such as guest bedrooms, as often but deep clean them before you use them to remove dust build up.

Kitchen

The kitchen is often the room in the house that needs the most attention because of the cooking that takes place there every day. Handle spills immediately when possible because letting them sit can stain your countertops, and food spills can promote bacteria growth. Get in the habit of wiping up messes as you are cooking instead of letting them sit until after dinner. Wipe down your countertops with a disinfecting wipe every night.

Clean up any spills in your appliances as they occur. Don’t let food spills sit in the oven (but wait until it’s cool to clean it!) because the mess can burn into your oven, making it harder to clean and causing smoke. If anything spills in the fridge, wipe it up immediately. Make an effort to check the expiration dates on food in the fridge every month so you don’t have bad food sitting around, and deep clean your appliances every 6 months.

Living Room / Den

Clutter seems to find it’s way into the living room. Make sure that everything has a designated spot, so you don’t end up with mail on every surface and shoes all over the floor. Teach kids where everything goes and encourage them to put their belongings int eh correct spot as soon as they get home from school. Take five minutes at the end of every day to pick up anything lying around the living room, and you should have a clutter-free living room!

One of the biggest cleaning issues in living rooms is dust. Once a month, take the time to dust everything in the living room. Don’t neglect high surfaces, such as the top of bookcases and the ceiling fan, or behind large items, such as behind the tv. This will keep your home dust-free, which will even improve the air quality.

Upholstery furniture also collects dust, as well as dirt, hair, germs, spills, and more. Spot treat spills on furniture with warm water as soon as they occur. Have a professional upholstery cleaner deep clean your furniture about every 6-12 months. Check the care tags on items such as throw pillow covers and wash them according to instructions.

Bedrooms

Every night, you shed skin cells, oil, and more. Check your sleeping area clean by washing your sheets once a week. Wash your pillows every six months. You can wash most pillows in the washing machine on a delicate setting. Evenly space your pillows along the walls of your dryer, and put a clean tennis ball or a ball of socks in the middle. As the pillows dry, the ball will fluff them right back up. Your mattress also needs to be cleaned about once a year. Vacuum it or have a professional mattress cleaner take care of it for you. If your mattress can, you should also flip it after cleaning.

As with the living room, regularly dust the surfaces in your bedroom, including hard to reach areas. Be sure to keep your laundry in a hamper and not in a pile on the floor. Do your laundry regularly, and be sure to take care of extra dirty laundry, such as gym or gardening clothes, immediately to cut down on odors.

Bathrooms

Sinks are often a problem spot in the bathroom. Immediately rinse down anything like toothpaste in your sink, and wipe out your sink every other day or so.use a hair collected in your shower drain to collect any stray hair, and empty it weekly. Rinse out your shower while you’re in it to rinse off any soap, and deep clean the shower once a month. Giving your toilet a quick cleaning once a week will keep it clean without a lot of effort.

As for linens, check the care tag on your bath mats. Many can be washed in a washing machine, which should be done every couple of months. Change out your towels every few days. Be sure to hang your towels up where they can dry completely in between use to prevent mildew.

 

It may seem like there is a lot that needs to be cleaned in your home on a regular basis, but a little bit of work every week means you don’t have to work super hard to deep clean your house.
